A quick vacuum clean (yes I'm one of those) got rid of a lot of the dirt, but a little noise still remains and another, deeper clean will be needed. The first copy I ordered also had an off-centre label on one side, causing the stylus to skid right to the centre spindle.
Andy Taylor's "guitar hero" chops are on the nose, and Simon LeBon's vocals are, well, what you would expect.īut the (initial) quality of the records is not so good, with a lot of debris left over from the vinyl pressing, causing surface noise and crackles. But John and Roger Taylor's rhythm section is tight and adventurous, with plenty of use of the Tom's and cymbals from Rog, and some funky slap playing from John. Being a keyboardist myself, I love Nick Rhodes's lush analogue pads, arpeggios and simple sequencer lines. But for its time, tracks such as Is There Anyone Out There, Sound Of Thunder etc, would certainly have fared well as singles as well.Įven at this early stage, musicianship is very good across the board.

The 3 singles (the 2 mentioned above, plus Careless Memories, my person favourite song) are the standouts of course. I'm amazed at just how well the songs on this lp have aged. But it is very well put together, with a matt finish, and silver foil accenting. The outer cover is of the single variety, no gatefold sleeve here unfortunately. Presentation is excellent, with the 2 discs housed in stiff card inners, with photos, lyrics, recording and band information etc. The price is very good, given that their 2nd lp Rio costs over twice the price.
So when I saw this release, with the additional disc of 12" versions of both singles, I had to get it. I originally bought this lp the day it was released, but have lost it, and the 12" versions of the 2 most successful singles, Planet Earth and Girls On Filmover the years. Nice way to treat your faithful customers amazon. Then 2 days after release date, amazon reduces the price by £5. I, like a lot of others, preordered the limited edition white vinyl version of this, at £24.99.
